My Reflections on Andela’s EPIC values
The first time I heard epic, it was from a friend when in high school he was talking about epic movies. So every time someone talks about epic the first thing that hits my mind is the epic movies and I love watching them actually. The Andela EPIC values actually made get the real meaning behind word epic.
Andela EPIC is an acronym which stands for Excellence, Passion, Integrity and Collaboration, and all these when demonstrated all together they make the best person out of you. From my thought, I think EPIC values are the secret recipe to Andela that make them produce the best software developers. Let’s jump into the values deeply and evaluate them letter by letter.
“E” for Excellence
from the dictionary, excellence means a quality which is unusually good and so surpasses ordinary standards. Andela believes you can become anything you want by just having the right mindset. From this approach of life, I have been to learn that nothing is impossible if you have a quality mind and this is one of the things that has enabled me to strive and learn so that I can achieve the best out of me. Andela has taught me that you have to go beyond the expectations and put all the efforts on what you doing just like from the definition surpass the ordinary standards.
“P” for passion
Passion is mostly defined as strong and barely controllable emotion. Andela believes that every goal should be approached with unwavering energy and conviction; embody grit and persistence. This has always been my motivation because without passion for technology I would not have been able to make it up to this far. It’s been my drive to work and succeed in this field, mostly by constantly learning new things, getting inspired by others and inspiring others on the areas that I’m good at. As from the definition of passion, the strong emotion on technology is my drive to make this field move more and be better.
“I” for Integrity
From the definition of Integrity means the quality of being honest and having strong moral principles. Andela chooses people who they trust and believe they’ll do honest work and are accountable for anything they do. This has made me develop principles on how to conduct myself, I avoid copying people’s work by asking for help whenever I’m stuck and also being accountable for the code I write. I have also learnt that integrity is a two-way responsibility: as others hold me accountable, I hold myself and others accountable, this line has made me be an integrity keeper.
“C” for Collaboration
from its definition Collaboration means the action of working with someone to produce something. Andela believes the best can be achieved out of teamwork and not one person so it encourages everyone to depend on other fellows for help. I gained this value from Andela and I have actually loved it since I started applying it. Collaboration enables diversity because you get to listen to different minds speak and gain new ideas from them. Teamwork makes work easier and also enables us to be able to interact with by learning their culture and building better relationships.
In conclusion, when all the EPIC values are brought together they build the best out of a person and enables to go off the limits and the borders. Motivate yourself and be epic.
